This project proposes to develop, validate, and verify novel methodologies for structural health monitoring (SHM) and damage identification (DID) methodologies for civil structures subjected to earthquake loads.The methodologies link high-fidelity mechanics-based nonlinear finite element (FE) models and Bayesian inference methods. This SHM approach is intended to provide a rapid assessment of the potential damage in the structure. Information about presence, location, type, and extent of damage will be obtained from the updated nonlinear mechanics-based FE model of the monitored structure and therefore the approach will provide a powerful tool for decision-making related to maintenance and inspections, disaster management, risk mitigation, public safety, and post-disaster rehabilitation and recovery.
